Our weekend away with Peeps
Our weekend away with Peeps
This weekend at Bendrigg Trust was honestly one of those experiences that stays with you long after you’ve come home.
Jem and Seb had the most amazing time. From the minute we arrived, we felt welcomed, understood and completely at ease. We met some truly lovely families, shared stories, made connections and spent time with people who understand the realities of our lives without needing any explanation.
The activities were incredible. Canoeing on the most beautiful sunny day was such a highlight, and the specialist equipment available meant Jem could join in safely and fully. As parents of children with complex needs, those moments don’t happen often enough, so they feel even more special when they do. Even when Jem had a seizure and needed a short nap out on the lake, we (including Jem) were still able to enjoy ourselves because we knew he was safe and supported.
The archery was brilliant and so thoughtfully adapted for both boys. Seb especially loved having opportunities to take part in ways that worked for him. When everything got a bit busy, the wheelchair accessible swing and rope swing became the perfect place for him and Jem to regulate and recharge. Wrapped up like a giant sausage roll, Jem absolutely loved hurtling down the tube slide with Dan. His huge grin when he reached the bottom summed up the joy we were all feeling.
And then there was the indoor swing… wow! Definitely Jem’s favourite thing of the whole weekend. Watching him soar through the air was equal parts terrifying and amazing for me – genuinely like watching astronaut training but the smile on his face made every second worth it.
The accommodation deserves a special mention too. Every detail had been thought about. From profiling beds and hoists to fully accessible bathrooms, everything was there to make life easier. For once, we weren’t having to problem solve every little thing. We could just be a family and enjoy ourselves.
The food was fantastic too – proper homemade meals that left everyone full and happy. What really touched me was when Jem was having a difficult time and struggling with his food. Without hesitation, the staff blended his meal and brought it to the table. Such a simple act of kindness, but it meant so much. That level of care and understanding was everywhere you looked.
Another favourite part of the weekend was the evening campfire. Sitting together and toasting marshmallows with other families while the sun (and drizzle!) went down was just lovely. There is something really special about sharing space with people who understand the highs, lows and chaos of family life like ours. No judgement, no explaining – just connection, warmth and a feeling of belonging.
The weekend finished with a small certificate ceremony that completely caught Dan and I off guard emotionally. It was personal, thoughtful and such a lovely way to celebrate what everyone had achieved.
The staff and volunteers at Bendrigg are really special. They are compassionate, empathetic, knowledgeable and so in tune with every child and family. Nothing felt like too much trouble. They created an environment where our children could thrive and where we as parents, could relax, connect and simply enjoy watching them have fun.
To Peeps, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You don’t just organise trips – you create opportunities, memories, friendships and experiences that many families like ours simply wouldn’t otherwise have. You turn ‘maybe one day’ into ‘we did it’, and that means more than words can say.
We are so incredibly grateful to have you in our corner and for everything you do for families like ours.
