Group therapy update
You may have seen our previous post about a new group therapy support we’re setting up and funding, exclusively for H.I.E. families.
We wanted to let you know that the start date has been pushed back a little, to the 13th of November. This is for a couple of reasons; to allow people more time to plan ahead, make arrangements and sign up, and also to help offer a safe place of support over the Christmas/holiday period.
It’s understandable that emotions are often heightened at this time of year, and we’re here to help in any way we can.
If you’d like to know more about the group therapy, Emma and James (who are running the sessions) have put some questions and answers together below. If you’d like to sign up to the group, or register your interest, please complete this short form or email liz@peeps-hie.org
Questions and answers about Peeps group therapy
What to expect?
A warm welcome.
An opportunity to spend time with other parents and family members that have had an HIE experience.
A relaxed space to talk about life, work, family or anything else on your mind.
A non-judgemental environment.
What’s the purpose of the group?
We are running the group in the run up to Christmas and in January. Time to let of steam about the stresses and struggles that come with winter. Then some time in the new year to reflect and decompress.
It’s time for yourself, so bring a brew.
Chances are there could be few gaffs (Emma’s IT skills) and giggles along the way!
Who is taking part?
Other Mum’s, Dad’s and family members that have children with H.I.E. experiences. Folk that know what life is like through their own similar yet different experiences.
Who is running it?
Trained therapist’s – Emma McDermott and James Stephens. Emma has worked with Peeps families through one-to-one sessions for over a year. She knows how daunting it can be to start talking about a complicated family life but the relief that come from realising that others feel the ups and downs too.
James has experience supporting individuals and families in a range of settings. He understands the many roles/hats parent’s hold, and the many directions they can find themselves pulled in. James hopes the group can provide a space to re-connect with self, be creative and feel empowered.

When is it?
7.30pm to 9pm on Wednesday nights.
13th, 20th, 27th of November
4th of December then a break over the holiday period starting again on
15th and 22nd of January.
How long does it last?
An hour and a half with a ten-minute break.
I’m not used to talking about myself what if I clam up?
Don’t worry, there is no pressure to talk. We would like to hear from everyone but in their own time. James has lots of ideas for exercises and easy talking points that will get everyone warmed up. Plus, we are both chatty which helps people ease into it.
Help, I’m no good using online video and technology.
No problem. MS Teams is easy to download and use with lots of tutorials available. Plus, we can set up a test run during the introductory call.
What happens if there’s an interruption?
It’s no problem to turn off the camera and crack to go and do whatever is needed.
What happens if I am late?
Just send an email to the group therapy email and join the online session when you can.
Sounds good but I am still unsure.
Why not make an enquiry with Peeps and Emma or James will give you a call to tell you more and answer any questions.
What if I start group therapy and can’t carry on for the entirety and do all six meetings?
Peeps are funding the sessions so if you can attend that would be great but if something comes up along the way that cannot be helped. Talk to therapists about any issues they are understanding and will do their best to be supportive and flexible.
What happens if I start it and decide it is just not for me?
Group therapy is not for everyone. If anything changes let Emma or James know and they will work with you to understand the issues and if comes to it, support any endings.
